Frequently Asked Questions

Microneedling

How can microneedling help me?

Microneedling is an effective treatment that aids skin healing and rejuvenates the skin by targeting a multitude of skin concerns such as: scarring, uneven skin tone and texture, fine lines and wrinkles, as well as hair loss. It helps to refine and rejuvenate your appearance.

What happens during an appointment?

The treatment involves creating micro injuries to the skin by using a medical grade microneedling device over the skin to encourage healing. To minimise discomfort, a topical anaesthetic can be used to numb the area prior to treatment.

How long do microneedling treatments take?

Depending on the number of treatment areas, your appointment should typically last for 45 minutes.

How do I prepare for my appoinment?

  • Unless prescribed by your doctor, avoid taking anti-inflammatories (aspirin, neurofen, ibuprofen, naproxen) for a few days prior to your treatment, as these increase the risk of bruising

  • If you are prone to bruising, you may take arnica orally a few days before your treatment to reduce the risk

  • If you are unwell on the day of your treatment, please contact the clinic

  • If there are any changes to your medical history or medication, please inform us before recieving treatment

  • Do not plan your treatment within 2 weeks of an important social event or holiday, as this may not allow enough time for side-effects to settle

How long do results take?

Results can typically be seen after 48 hours and peak at 6 weeks.

How long do the results last?

To prolong results, we recommend a course of 6 treatments, 2-4 weeks apart. Following a treatment plan will yield long-lasting results.

What will my results look like?

Results are individual to patients, depending on your treatment area, treatment concerns and your body’s healing response to the procedure. Nonetheless, you should expect to experience;

  • Brighter, more even skin tone

  • Smoother skin

  • Firmer, tighter skin and boosted volume

Are there any risks related to microneedling treatment?

You may experience some mild swelling and tenderness after treatment. Although rare, bruising can occur. The micro holes could develop crusts, which should fall off after a few days. At DermZen Clinic we only use products purchased from reputable pharmacies and we have excellent infection control policies, which we strictly adhere to minimise complications.

What is the recovery time?

Minimal downtime is associated with microneedling treatments, and most patients are able to return to work after an appointment. Your skin may appear crusted, dry, swollen or red in the first few days following your treatment.

How do I care for my skin afterwards?

  • Use SPF 50 sun protection

  • Do not apply cosmetics to the treated area within a 12 hour period of treatment

  • Avoid all direct sources of heat and radiation e.g. sunlight, UV radiation and saunas

  • Avoid strenuous physical exercises/activities for 7 days

  • Keep the treatment area clean and dry

  • The skin may initially feel tender to touch, this will subside. You may gently massage the area to ease and a cold compress may be indirectly applied for short periods of time

  • Avoid smoking, as this could prevent you healing properly

  • Contact us as soon as possible, if you experience any unexpected side effect after treatment
