What is Advanced Electrolysis?

Advanced electroylysis is a specialist skin treatment that can be used to painlessly remove a variety of skin concerns quickly and effeciently. Using a sterilised probe, your experienced practitioner will precisely target and cauterise your skin blemish. Small electric currents are delivered through the device, causing the structure and contents of the blemish to coagulate or dry up.

How can Advanced Electrolysis treatment help me?

This effective treatment can be used to treat a variety of skin concerns, such as; scarring, skin growths and unwanted hair growth. The treatment has been used for over a Century, and is characterised for causing minimal pain.

Are there any risks related to Advanced Electrolysis treatment?

Electrolysis treatments have an excellent safety profile. During the treatment, you may feel current and experience a slight stinging sensation. Afterwards, your skin may feel sore, inflamed or red. There are also risks, such as scarring and pigmentation, which may occur in rare cases. We will discuss these with you during your consultation. It is important to only have your treatments performed by qualified medical professionals.

How many Advanced Electrolysis treatments will I need?

The number of treatment sessions you need will depend on the number of skin blemishes being treated. In some cases, repeat treatments are recommended, such as those targeting unwanted hair or scarring. In other cases, for example treatment of warts, a single treatment may be sufficient. Your Practitoner will be able to advise you on this during your consultation.

How do I prepare for my appoinment?

  • Unless prescribed by your doctor, avoid taking anti-inflammatories (aspirin, neurofen, ibuprofen, naproxen) for a few days prior to your treatment, as this increases the risk of bruising

  • If you are prone to bruising, take arnica orally a few days before your treatment to reduce the risk

  • For 48 hours before your treatment, do not apply topical retinoids, exfoliating or products containing active acids, such as; Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) and Poly-hydroxy acids (PHAs) to the treatment area.

  • If you are unwell on the day of your treatment, please contact us to reschedule your appointment

  • Please inform us before recieving treatment if there are any changes to your medical history or medication.

  • Do not plan your treatment within 2 weeks of an important social event or holiday, as this may not allow enough time for side-effects to settle

What happens during an appointment?

We would have a consultation with you, going through your medical history form (which you would have completed prior to your appointment), assess your treatment area to determine if treatment is appropriate for you. We will go through the side effects specific to your treatment and costs involved, to enable you make an informed decision. Upon completion of consent, pre-treatment clinical photographs will be taken. Your skin will be cleaned and prepped for treatment. Electrolysis treatment is targeted to the affected area via a small, sterile probe, which delivers electric current to the blemish.

How long do Advanced Electrolysis treatments take?

Depending on the number of treatment areas, your appointment should typically last for 15 - 60 minutes.

How long do the results last?

This depends on the skin concern being treated as well as individual factors such as lifestyle, genetics and medications. Treatment results may be permanent. However, when treating conditions such as warts, it is possible to develop them in other areas following treatment.

What is the recovery time?

Minimal downtime is associated with Advanced Electrolysis treatments, and most patients are able to return to work after their treatment. You may expect some crusts or scabs to form after your treatment. These may last between 5-14 days. It is important that you avoid touching or picking the scabs off, even if they itch. You may experience redness and swelling for 24 hours after your treatment. You may apply non-perfumed aloe vera soothing gel and use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ regularly during the day.

What after effects will I experience after my treatment?

Your skin may feel sore and appear inflamed, red and slightly swollen for 24-48 hours after your treatment. The treated area will typically form scabs or crusts, which will drop off between 1-3 weeks for the face and 2-5 weeks for the body. Although rare, there are risks of scarring and hyperpigmentation around the treatment area.

I am going on holiday soon, can I still have this treatment?

It is not recommended to have this treatment before going on holiday, as your skin needs to heal and the sun can cause skin pigmentation.

How do I care for my skin afterwards?

After your electrolysis treatment, it is important to keep your skin well looked after.

  • Avoid touching, rubbing or picking the scabs or crusts

  • Avoid make up for 48 hours

  • Avoid high impact exercise for 48 hours

  • Avoid spa treatments, hot baths, jacuzzis and saunas for 48 hours

  • Avoid consuming alcohol for 24 hours

  • Avoid smoking, as this could prevent your skin from healing properly

  • Avoid exposing your skin to the sun

  • Stay hydrated

  • Protect your skin from the sun

  • After 24 hours, you may gently cleanse the treated area with a non-perfumed cleanser and pat dry with a clean towel

  • Contact us as soon as possible, if you experience any unexpected side effect after treatment
